1960 Leyland Beaver
We have re-built a 1960 Leyland Beaver, with a pre Power Plus 680 Engine for Mickey Whiteside of Whitesides Transport Ltd.
This Leyland Beaver was built in 1960 and first registered in New Zealand in 1961 by Binnie Bros, stock carriers from Rotorua. Mickey bought it in 1968 (pictured left, three days in Mickey's ownership, in Oxford Street in Te Puke). Whiteside Transport carted stock, logs and whey with it, eventually selling it in the early 1970's.
In 2004 it was spotted in a paddock in Tikokino in the Hawkes Bay, and Mickey decided it would make a great project for restoration. We believe only 20 of these ever came to New Zealand and this may be the only one left, perhaps worldwide.
We are currently re-building a 680 Pre Power Plus Engine for this truck.
We have the exhaust brake manifold and actuator (pictured right) but need information on plumbing and linkages. We believe this came out as an optional extra. They have geniune Leyland part numbers cast on them.
The chassis has been painted in "Cornflower Blue", which was Binnie Bros company colours. The engine is mounted, and most of the plumbing is in place.
Much of the wiring is now complete, with the battery box and tail light brackets in place.
The cab has been mounted, and the truck is making major steps forward.
We would like to thank Ron Doggett who has provided us with some fantastic information about the truck from Binnie Bros days.
The Leyland Beaver has now been completed, and is heading out to join the Long Lap Classic Commercial Rally.
If you can help us with any information or photos about this truck, engine, or any of the components, please contact us either by e-mail or on 07 883 7354.
